Lighting design can improve the aesthetics of the decor and people’s well-being

The work began and the lighting project ended up being treated as something for the final moments. But lighting design is far from being superficial and impacts three important factors in everyday life: well-being, efficiency in carrying out tasks and even savings in energy consumption.

We list four factors that need to be taken into account when thinking about lighting in residential environments. From hiring an expert professional to choosing the right color temperature for each space, they prove by A + B why lighting design is essential.

Come with us and make the best choices to enhance the environments and decor of your home.

When to design?

The ideal is to carry out the lighting project in conjunction with the architectural project (construction or renovation), to make better use of natural lighting according to the orientation of the terrain, the openings and the integration of spaces. At this stage it is also possible to efficiently adapt the positioning of lighting points, as well as the division of circuits, allowing everything to occur as planned when the work is completed.

Who can do it?

It is advisable to choose a professional and not take risks alone, the chance of making a mistake and incurring a loss is great. According to the Council of Architecture and Urbanism (CAU-BR), since 2013, resolution no. 51 punctuates professional duties and indicates that objective lighting or lighting engineering projects (amount of light required, energy consumption, etc.) can be carried out by engineers. However, the lighting project, also called “Lighting Architecture Project” and, therefore, which involves subjective issues, such as visual comfort, atmosphere related to the use of space or spatial impression of the built environment, and even factors related to our metabolism, it can only be carried out by architects.

Too little or too much? No, just right!

A good lighting solution begins by taking into account the environment as a whole, its uses, decoration and finishes and only then applying the right amount of light, whether in terms of power, color temperature or type. Excessive light can trigger exhaustion and easily waste electrical energy and materials. For spaces that are insufficiently lit, the problem is that they become monotonous and have their aesthetic and functional aspects devalued and even compromised.

Understanding the types of lighting

You know that lonely lamp in the center of the ceiling? It is the most basic type of so-called direct and diffuse lighting, that is, that which illuminates in a general way, without contrasts or highlights. In addition to this, there are two other segmentations: indirect, which acts by reflecting the luminous flux onto a surface that has high reflectance, illuminating uniformly and without glare. And the direct punctual, which is focused and is subdivided into “task” (as in a lamp on a drawing table); “highlight” (which highlights an aspect or object of the decoration) or “of effect” (used to create ambiances composed of the duo “light and shadow”). And remember: the complete project must foresee the contribution of illuminance from decorative luminaires!

Again, think about the use

The role of the actions we perform in an environment is essential for the development of the lighting project. Who will use the environment, at what times and for what activities makes all the difference when designing. Allowing the adaptation of lighting, adapting it to each use and moment is the designer’s role. Allowing the appropriate intensity and color temperature to accompany activities 24 hours a day is technically possible and desirable.

Finally, the beauty

The beauty of a lighting project lies in its essence: the light. But no one doubts that the accurate choice of luminaires also, depending on their aesthetics, makes a difference. To get it right, think about the overall decoration: style, materials, colors, textures and maintain coherence between the different pieces that will occupy the ceiling, wall, floor and/or table.

We have a qualified and oriented team to create lighting projects that meet different contexts and individual needs, influencing your well-being. A team capable of merging the beauty and magic of decorative lighting with technical lighting, creating extraordinary environments in which it is possible to feel the comfort and warmth provided by light.
